Mark Roberts
why is catcher in the rye used as a hand book for people who kill not only mark chapman but others?

I've heard others besides Chapman used "catcher" as a refrence to there miss deeds that guy who killed the actress from my sister sam had it and I know theres others but can't think of there names. I've read this book and can't find how someone could use it in this manner am I missing something? it was also used in the julia roberts/mel gibson movie consperecy theroy please won't some one explain this to me

When reading Catcher, you cannot read for the plot or the events, you must read for the characterization of Holden Caufield. His contradictory nature and the misdeeds it brought about are most likely what your referencing. Holden hated "the phonies", much the same way psychotic people disassociate themselves with society.

This is not to say that Holden was crazy- but his drive for individualism often made him shoot himself in the foot, so to speak- he spent his youth introverted, wrapped up in his own outlandish opinions and generalizations about those around him, and this pattern of behavior led him to (almost) do things that he knew were wrong. I think many people with anti-social disorder can relate to him simply because they hate the "phonies" too....

It's a fantastic book (I stole it when i was 18...lol). If you missed it, i suggest reading it again, but this time putting all your attention into how Holden thinks.
