Is 1st cutting of brome hay ok ?
Is 1st cutting of brome hay ok for semi-active and lawn ornament older horse? I have heard that it has a lot of protein.
Yes, it should be fine. Actually the first cutting might be better. Brome tends to be pretty coarse, and if you get the first cutting, that will be the leafiest, least coarse cutting of the year.

What will happen to my free-lease horse after I go to college?
I am worried that my brilliant pony will end up being a pasture ornament after I head off for college. I have a free-lease with her, where I train and ride her whenever I want as long as I give the owners daughter occasional lessons (once every couple months...she doesn't like to ride), so I am very worried that she will just sit in pasture and get fat. When I first started working with her she was almost a hundred pounds over weight and had almost no muscle. As this is a free lease I have no control over her fate...how should I go about securing her future?
I am the one free-leasing the horse, and there was never a contract written up.
I know a pasture ornament is not what we want our horses to be, but look at the pro's:
Shes happy
being fed
is at a good home that you trust
has shelter
and can have a nice break for a while.
There is nothing wrong with a pasture ornament for a year or two. Just let the little kids at you barn bring her cookies, love her, and ride her ocassionaly!!!!:)
